You need a vision to lay out sheets for musicians. It is very important to think about how the notes are delivered. It must be legible, so not too small. But if it is written down too large, the sheets will be too long and the musicians will only turn around the pages. At Big Band concerts you often see that the bass player, drummer and pianist have to move huge surfaces of sheet music. That is at the expense of music and is therefore undesirable as such. Because the sheets of a one-hour suite are running in the dozens of A4 pages, I have to come up with a cunning plan. My plan is to turn the pages. Then there will never be more then 2 pages open on the lectern again. That does however, require a thorough batch layout. Because the musicians must always be able to turn over at the end of every second page. In the preparation of the sheets, I have to make sure that the bars are paused, always at the end of the second page, or at the beginning of the page that has been turned over. That is a whole puzzle, which I eventually spent 2 whole days doing. But that’s worth it, because no matter how beautiful you write, if the musicians are arguing with piles of paper, nobody hears how beautiful something is written. Music is only there when it is performed eventually.
